    Student life at Osaka Seikei Daigaku has been an enriching experience for me. I have enjoyed my student life here so much that I already apprehend the day that I will have to leave.
I am thankful for so many things and to so many people. I recall the first time I came here two years ago, feeling extremely anxious about my following 3 months in Japan. But as soon as I arrived, I was made feel at home and at ease. The teachers here at Seikei have helped me in so many ways that I cannot thank them enough for their guidance and support.
The students here at Seikei have also been of great help and support to me. I was lucky enough to make many friends, and feel accepted within their groups. The friends I have made here, some I have now known for 2 years, and I have made new friends and acquaintances, which makes me so happy. My friends have been kind enough to show me around different places all over Kansai, teach me about the life and culture of Japan, and things in particular to Kansai.
I am now here for the second time, but as a research student, as I wanted to improve my skill and learn more about the techniques and different styles of Nihon-ga. So far I really feel that I have progressed thanks to the guidance of my Nihon-ga teachers, but also from the help of my colleagues. Actually being here and spending time with the students of Seikei, and seeing how they work has been a real eye-opener.
For a long time I have been hesitant as to which career path to follow, and what I should do once I finish my studies. But being here at Seikei has strengthened my will and confidence, and now I feel optimistic about my future.
Aside from my Nihon-ga studies, I have had the chance to try my hand at Yuuzen and Urushi. It has been extremely interesting and wonderful to have the opportunity to learn these traditional arts of Japan. Next I would like to try Touki.
Another factor that has enriched my experience here, is the organisation of school trips/tours (見学) arranged and prepared by a couple of teachers here. Every two weeks I have had the chance to visit a good number of exhibitions and events in Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe. I have gained a broader sense of the various arts from here and all around the world, and has inspired me in many ways for my art.
I have of course also received Japanese lessons, and this has been of valuable help to me as I want to progress in my Japanese. My volunteer teacher has been especially dedicated to me; not only helping my progression, but in providing me with plenty of information and leaflets about upcoming exhibitions and cultural events. My teacher was also kind enough to invite me, and my parents when they were visiting me at the time, to a Yoshino cha-kai (吉野茶会) ceremony. That was such a fascinating experience, and one that I shall never forget.
Another thing that will stay marked in my memory is the Seikei Rock Festival which was held in October. It was something that I had never before experienced at my previous University in the UK. I have not seen that kind of camaraderie among all the students to put all their strength and effort to making what Seikei Rock Festival was, a success. It was an extremely inspiring experience.
The Graduation Exhibition was also very impressive to me. I was able during that week to see all the works produced by the students and Seikei. And as I saw all the wonderful creations of the students, it made me feel privileged to be a part of their University.
Unfortunately ‘all good things come to and end’, and as I mentioned before I dread the day I will have to leave Seikei once and for all and return to Europe, which seems like another world and so far away from here. Thank you Seikei, for letting me come here and continue my studies.
大阪成蹊大学芸術学部での留学生活は、私にとって素晴らしい経験となっています。こちらであまりに楽しく学生生活を送っているので、ここを去らなければならない日が来ることを今から恐れています。
こちらに来てから多くの方々に、そして多くの事柄に感謝しています。思い起こしますと、2年前に初めて本学に来た際には、それからの日本での3ヶ月にわたる滞在がとても心配でした。しかし、到着するやいなや私は居心地のよさを感じ、すぐに安心をすることができたのです。芸術学部の先生方には、とても十分にお礼を言い尽くせないほど多方面にわたり助けていただきました。
また、本学の学生達にも色々な面で助けてもらっています。私はたくさんの友人を得ることができて本当に幸せですし、彼らのグループの一員として迎え入れてもらっているのだ、と感じています。こちらでできた友人の多くはすでに2年間の友好を交え、さらに新しい友人や知人ができることは本当に嬉しいことです。友人の多くが関西の至る所を案内してくれ、日本における生活や文化について、特に関西について様々なことを教えてくれました。
現在、私は2度目の留学で、日本画の技能を磨き、より多くの様々な技法や異なる様式を学ぶため、美術学科絵画コース日本画クラスの研究生として在籍しています。これまでのところ、本当に多くのことを学べたと感じていますし、ここまで導いて下さった日本画の先生方、そしてまた、色々教えてくれた級友に感謝しています。実際、芸術学部にいることや大学で友人と過ごす時間、そして、彼らがどのように制作をするのかを見聞することは本当に新しい発見の連続です。
長い間、私は今後の進路について、そして卒業後何をすべきかを決められずにいました。
しかし、ここ芸術学部にいることで、私の気持ちがはっきりし、自信をつけることができ、今は将来について楽観的に捉えることができるようになりました。
日本画以外にも、友禅染、木工・漆工を学び、作品を制作することができました。日本のこれらの伝統的な芸術を学べるということは非常に興味深く、そして素晴らしいことです。
次は陶芸に挑戦したいと思います。
こちらでの私の豊かな経験の中でこれらの他に、数人の先生方により計画、実施される『デザイン・美術学外演習』の授業が挙げられます。2週間毎に京都や大阪、兵庫で開催されている多くの良い展覧会や催しを訪ねる機会となりました。それら日本や世界からの多様な芸術から幅広い感性を得ることができ、そしてそれらから多くの感化を受けました。
もちろん、日本語の授業も受けており、日本語の上達を望む私にとって貴重な時間となっています。私を教えて下さっているボランティアの日本語の先生は特に熱心で、私の日本語の上達を支えるのみならず、展覧会や文化的な催しについての多くの情報や案内状を用意して下さいました。また、ご親切に、私とその時ちょうど私を訪ね来日していた両親を、吉野の茶会にご招待して下さいました。これは魅惑的な経験であり、決して忘れることのできないものの一つになりました。
この他で私の記憶に強く残るものに10月に開催された“成蹊Rock Festival(大学祭)”があります。これはイギリスで通っていたノーリッジ芸術大学では経験したことの無いものでした。
私は、すべての学生が“成蹊Rock Festival”の成功に向けて結束し、努力する、そのような学生間の友情、強い結びつきを見たことがなかったのです。これは非常に私を奮い立たせる経験となりました。
卒業制作展もまた、私にとって印象深いものでした。会期中、私は学生達による作品のすべてを見ることができました。それらの素晴らしい創作の数々を拝見し、私も彼らと同じ大学の一員であるいうことに誇りを感じました。
残念なことに“すべての楽しきことには必ず終わりがある”、前述のとおり、この留学を最後に成蹊を去り、まるで別世界であり、ここより随分遠く離れているように思えるヨーロッパに帰らなければならない日が来ることが本当に怖くて仕方ありません。
“ありがとう 成蹊！”この大学で勉強を継続する機会を与えて下さり感謝いたします。
